This topic is for discussion on commercial bins on Main Street, including concerns around their location, impact on the street scene, accessibility, cleanliness and any possible alternative solutions that could improve the area for businesses, residents and visitors.

We’ve reviewed a range of possible solutions for commercial bin storage and collection on Main Street, alongside the survey results. Some options received support in principle, but once practical site constraints were assessed, several were found not to be workable.

    Options reviewed
Church Street pick-up was reviewed, but this is not viable because it depends on land owned by a private landowner.

Bins located at the rear of the properties were also reviewed, but this is not viable because the rear ground sits below street level and the bins cannot be brought up the stairs from the properties.

The Gardenside Avenue side option was considered, but land and road ownership is unclear, so this is not currently a workable route.

Daily collection was also reviewed, but this would not be suitable for these types of businesses.

    What this leaves
This leaves one route still to be explored: creating a bin store within parking bays.

    Survey context
The survey showed support for some options, particularly rear-of-property storage and Church Street pick-up. However, those options are not practical once physical and ownership constraints are taken into account. That is why attention is now focused on whether a parking-bay bin store could provide a workable solution.

We’ll continue to share updates as this is explored further.
